| The
conceptualisation and
facilitation of appropriate
training and capacity building is
central to all the work of Marine
& Estuarine Research cc.
We provide a training service to
a range of clients, including
universities, technikons as well
as the corporate sector. We
initiated a higher degree bursary
programme in 1999 which provides
support for previously
disadvantage students in coastal
ecology and marine science and
are currently training and
employing on contract basis a
number of students and developing
their skills in the techniques
used in environmental impact
assessment. We are currently
providing bursaries to three
M.Sc. students Ms J. Blackler, Mr
D. Pillay, and Mr W. Mastenbroek
who are carrying out their
studies in the field of Estuarine
Ecology these bursaries
not only cover their fees but
also provide subsistence
allowances. A bursary is also
being offered to previously
disadvantaged students studying
towards their B.Tech (equivalent
of Honours) at the Department of
Nature Conservation at the
Mangosuthu Technikon during 2003.
The student will also be assigned
to one of the projects running in
2003 to provide hands on training
and skills transfer. Both managing
members are also currently
involved in teaching
undergraduate and postgraduate
coastal ecology courses as well
as a co-ordinating a number of
research projects run through the
University of Natal which enables
them to be in touch with the
latest research and techniques
used in the field of coastal
ecology. Prof Ticky Forbes is
also currently co-ordinating the
Marine Ecology B.Sc. (Honours)
course run within the Science
Faculty as well as the recently
ratified Marine & Coastal
Management M.Sc. degree.
